The Secretary-General of the International Civil Defence Organization (ICDO), Mr. Arguj Kalantarli, held an online meeting with Mr. Luis Alonso Amaya, Director General of Civil Protection, Prevention and Mitigation of Disasters of El Salvador, on 4 September 2026. The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange views on the current cooperation between El Salvador and the ICDO and explore avenues for further strengthening their engagement.
The discussions focused on enhancing practical cooperation in civil protection and disaster risk reduction, including through training and capacity-building activities, exchanges of expertise and professional experience. Particular attention was given to opportunities for further strengthening the ICDO’s engagement with El Salvador and, more broadly, with countries across the Central American and Latin American region.
Secretary-General Kalantarli briefed Mr. Amaya on the ICDO’s ongoing institutional reform and modernization process, aimed at enhancing the Organization’s effectiveness, strengthening its international partnerships, and further broadening its engagement with Member States. The importance of active Member State participation in the Organization’s activities and forthcoming initiatives was emphasized, while appreciation was expressed for El Salvador’s engagement and support for these efforts.
The two sides also exchanged views on the importance of strengthening international cooperation in civil protection and disaster risk reduction, particularly in addressing shared regional challenges and promoting the exchange of knowledge and best practices. The Secretary-General also expressed ICDO’s interest in further developing its engagement with El Salvador and strengthening its cooperation with countries across the region.
