From April 22 to May 2, 2025, the International Civil Defence Organization (ICDO) conducted an international training course titled “Smart Surveillance Technology: Risk Monitoring and Disaster Tracking” at the National School of Civil Protection in Niamey, Republic of Niger.
The training aimed to strengthen the skills of civil protection professionals and modernize approaches to responding to natural and man-made hazards using advanced digital tools such as satellite imaging, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and geographic information systems (GIS).
The program included both theoretical and practical sessions, field exercises using drones, image processing for orthophoto generation, and scenario modeling based on collected data.
A total of 32 specialists from seven ICDO Member States — Burkina Faso, Republic of Congo, Guinea, Mali, Niger, Senegal, and Togo — participated in the training.
All participants successfully passed the final assessment upon completion of the course.
During the mission in Niger, a series of coordination meetings were also held with the national civil protection leadership, focusing on institutional cooperation, technical capacity development, and planning of future joint initiatives.
