The Secretary-General of the International Civil Defence Organization (ICDO), Mr. Arguj Kalantarli, held a meeting with Mr. Idris Latreche, Permanent Representative of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria to the United Nations Office at Geneva and other international organizations in Switzerland, at the ICDO Headquarters, on 13 August 2026.
The meeting provided an opportunity to reaffirm the longstanding partnership between the ICDO and Algeria and to discuss avenues for taking this cooperation further while highlighting the value of Algeria’s sustained engagement as a longstanding and reliable partner.
Mr. Kalantarli briefed Mr. Latreche on the ICDO’s ongoing reform and modernization efforts, as well as its current initiatives aimed at strengthening the Organization’s effectiveness, expanding its international cooperation and developing closer engagement with Member States and national civil protection authorities.
The discussions also explored opportunities to broaden practical cooperation, particularly through the joint organization of training and capacity-building programmes and the development of further joint initiatives. Both sides underlined the importance of strengthening cooperation with national civil protection authorities and creating additional opportunities for the exchange of expertise.
The importance of further expanding cooperation through the ICDO’s International Monitoring and Coordination Centre (IMCC) was also emphasized, with confidence expressed in further deepening cooperation in this area.
The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to further broaden and deepen cooperation and to identify new avenues for joint engagement.
