ICDO and the Democratic Republic of the Congo Exchange Views on the Current Ebola Situation and Institutional Cooperation

On 22 May 2026, the Secretary-General of the International Civil Defence Organization (ICDO), Mr. Arguj Kalantarli, held an online meeting with Mr. Joseph Nkinzo, Director General of the General Directorate of Civil Protection of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The meeting focused on matters of mutual interest, with particular emphasis on strengthening cooperation between the ICDO and the Democratic Republic of the Congo in relevant civil protection fields.

During the discussions, special attention was given to the current medical and civil situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, including concerns related to the renewed spread of the Ebola virus disease in certain affected areas and the challenges arising from the evolving situation. Deep concern was expressed regarding the current situation. In this regard, the ICDO expressed its solidarity with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as its readiness to continue supporting efforts aimed at enhancing preparedness, coordination and response capacities within the framework of the Organization’s mandate and cooperation mechanisms.

The parties also exchanged views on the ongoing reforms and modernization processes within the ICDO, and the efforts aimed at strengthening the Organization’s effectiveness, operational capacity and cooperation mechanisms were highly appreciated by the Congolese side.

The meeting, which mainly focused on the current Ebola-related situation and related developments, further addressed opportunities for expanding cooperation in the areas of training programmes, expert participation and institutional capacity-building activities conducted by the ICDO. The parties also discussed practical aspects related to enhancing cooperation and facilitating the effective implementation of joint activities and engagements in the future.

The meeting was held in a constructive and productive atmosphere, during which both sides reaffirmed their willingness to further strengthen cooperation and maintain close coordination on issues of mutual interest.
